Kick-off meeting „Supporting Multilingual Classrooms“

31. Oktober 2018

ECML Team

On October 30 and 31, 2018 a kick-off meeting for the project „Supporting Multilingual Classrooms“ run by the European Center for Modern Languages (ECML) in cooperation with the Council of Europe gathered 9 local coordinators from across Europe. Representing the University College of Teacher Education Vienna (PH Wien) Ms. Kulhanek attended the kick-off meeting in the role of the local coordinator for Austria.

The agenda of the meeting included a brief introduction of the ECML initiatives and current projects, but moreover the introduction of all local coordinators and the challenges their countries are experiencing in facing multilingualism and plurilingualism in classrooms. The exchange of bright and exciting ideas between the ECML experts and the local coordinators has established a firm foundation for the upcoming 2-day workshops which will be held in each of those 9 countries. The following topics incited a lot of interest among others:

  • Rethinking plurilingualism  and shifting the mindset
  • Reflecting myths on plurilingualism
  • Pluralistic approaches to language lessons (projects like CARAP, including the language of schooling, making associations, spotting patterns)
  • Benefiting from linguistic diversity across the curriculum (how might linguistic diversity benefit all children in the classroom)

Our Workshop

The Competence Center for Multilingualism, Migration and Human Rights Education is looking forward to be the hosting and organizing party for this exciting project. All details about the workshop are to be announced soon via Newsletter and social media.
